Conditions were excellent, (almost flat water) as the crews raced on past Gravesend by which time Le Figarow had won the lead.
And so it continued for the rest of the day. The crews evenly matched in speed and one crew or another only gaining on "changeovers" when the crew is rotated within the boat and the support boat allowing crew members at least some rest!
The early effort of being "chasing boat" down the Thames finally told on Le Figarow and as darkness fell Langstone finally got the lead and despite a short lived "grounding" when they tried to cut a corner too fine they slowly pulled out to a 42 minute win in Ramsgate arriving just before 02.00 in the early hours of Saturday morning. Here this leg of the Race was stopped to best catch the tide and weather conditions for what will be a long haul to Le Havre.
Although still tired crews looked envigorated after a good Friday night's sleep while Langstone team Leader Mike Gilbert was seen walking around with a smile on his face as the crews waited for the Restart which is due off at 11.30 hrs.
