Rowing Crews off to Paris

As Big Ben was striking the hour (11.00) the first two crews to race to Paris "on water" shot under Westminster Bridge to cheers of a large spectator crowd on the bridge.

Langstone Cutters took an early lead coping better with the bouncy water in the Pool of London and steering a slightly better course. By the time they had got to the Barrier they had opened up a quarter of a mile lead on the 2nd placed crew Le Figarow. With over 400 miles still to go however that sort of lead at this stage makes little difference.

By Gravesend however the chasing crew was eating back into that lead. All to play for it seems!

At the moment the weather is fairly benign and with a strong ebb and a lot of land water coming down the crews can expect a a swift passage to Dover and the first stop tomorrow.
